Affogato in Khar is the kind of place architecture lovers should happily detour for, even if the visit lasts little longer than an espresso. Opened in 2023, this compact Mumbai café and gelateria was designed by kaviar:collaborative as a below street level room that borrows the visual language of a small art gallery. The space measures about 600 to 650 square feet, seats roughly 25 guests, and turns concrete, stone and wood into a calm beige stage for coffee and gelato. The walls, ceiling and floor are wrapped in micro concrete with hand trowelled marks that echo the swirl of gelato, while stone plinths present the machines and displays like exhibits.  On the food side, the most relevant name is co founder Shalini Rattan, known for artisanal gelato, alongside restaurateur Suren Joshi. Affogato was conceived around three Italian pleasures under one roof: bread, gelato and coffee. That makes the signature almost self evident: affogato itself, with hot espresso meeting silky gelato. Add a pet friendly setting and a location on 17th Road in Khar West, and you have a stop that feels very Mumbai in tempo, yet unusually restrained in design. It is best approached as a short, stylish pause rather than a grand culinary destination.
