Boutiquehotel 't Fraeyhuis

Location & practical

An Aristocratic Past, a Rather Sociable Present

  • Flemish architecture with an aristocratic past.
  • Lush garden, cocktail bar and refined dining.
  • Prime location beside Minnewaterpark and the Beguinage.
  • 12 rooms
  • Minnewater / Beguinage

The mansion that gave ’t Fraeyhuis its name no longer exists. Built for Bruges aristocrat, judge and keen photographer Ludovic Fraeys de Veubeke, it was demolished in 1969, its grounds eventually becoming the leafy Minnewaterpark. Fortunately, another creation by the same architect, Théodore Raison, survived nearby, and today offers considerably more welcoming accommodation than its original owner could have imagined.

Dating from 1929, the hotel wears its Flemish heritage convincingly, with picturesque stepped gables and historical details, including a genuine late Gothic stone fireplace. Inside, twelve individually designed rooms combine dark tones, contemporary photography and modern furnishings. The Junior Suite with Fireplace is particularly appealing, with a freestanding bathtub and a fireplace operated by remote control. Even the most committed explorer might find good reasons for a leisurely morning.

The garden, however, is where ’t Fraeyhuis truly comes into its own. Beneath mature trees, Bar Boutique attracts locals and hotel guests for cocktails, wine and tapas. As evening falls, lanterns illuminate the lush greenery and the terrace takes on a wonderfully sociable character. At restaurant In The Mood, refined Flemish classics and contemporary bistro cooking provide an equally tempting reason to linger. And should dinner extend into another glass of wine, your room is conveniently close.

Mornings begin with an à la carte champagne breakfast, while private parking adds a welcome touch of practicality in a city best explored on foot. Welcoming guests aged sixteen and over, ’t Fraeyhuis is particularly suited to couples looking for an intimate city escape with a lively social side. The medieval Beguinage is practically next door, and Bruges’ historic centre is a short stroll away. With so much to discover on its doorstep, the only real dilemma may be deciding how much time to spend away from that lovely garden.
