Capella Hanoi
11 P. Lê Phụng Hiểu, French Quarter, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội 100000, Vietnam
About
Capella Hanoi sits just around the corner from Hanoi Opera House, and that matters more than it first appears. Built by the French between 1901 and 1911 as a smaller cousin of Paris’ Palais Garnier, the theatre once hosted European opera for colonial society before becoming part of the story of modern Vietnam itself. The surrounding streets of Hanoi’s French Quarter still carry traces of that period. Tall shutters, faded façades and old villas remain scattered between cafés and the constant rhythm of scooters. Many luxury hotels in Hanoi rely on colonial grandeur. Capella chose another direction entirely. Designer Bill Bensley imagined a private residence where opera singers, composers and performers of the 1920s might have gathered after a night at the theatre. The concept sounds ambitious enough to raise an eyebrow. Then you arrive. The hotel has only forty seven rooms, which immediately changes the atmosphere. It feels intimate and almost personal. Antique trunks, costume sketches and opera memorabilia appear throughout the building. More than a thousand objects were collected for the hotel and some of the stories attached to them are entirely fictional. Portraits and biographies of invented performers sit beside real historical references with such confidence that you occasionally stop and wonder whether you have missed a chapter of cultural history somewhere along the way. The Opera Suites deserve particular attention because they move furthest into this world. They avoid the repeated luxury template found in many city hotels and each follows its own identity. The Grand Opera Suite opens onto a private terrace with a jacuzzi while the Royal Opera Suite places a marble bathtub outdoors above Hanoi’s rooftops. Capella also keeps some of its best details slightly hidden. The Michelin starred Hibana by Koki sits below street level, while the indoor pool called La Grotta feels unexpectedly calm after the visual energy of the rest of the hotel. It becomes surprisingly easy to understand why people remember this hotel long after checking out. Not because of one grand gesture, but because of the small details they keep noticing along the way.
