Casa Bonavita
Casa Bonavita is in Attard, which already says something. This is not the Malta of blue water postcards or anonymous hotel gloss. Attard sits inland, among limestone walls, gardens and old houses that seem to know how to stay cool. The hotel occupies an eighteenth century Maltese house, restored by Christopher and Suzanne Sharp, founders of The Rug Company. Once you know that, the place starts to make sense: a house shaped by people who trust fabric, colour and a well chosen chair.
The mood is private, layered and slightly eccentric. Stone arches, painted ceilings, patterned tiles, scalloped canopies, wicker chairs, pistachio bathrooms, monogrammed plates and botanical walls all have their moment. Some rooms are pale and garden like, others go for full theatre, with deep reds and canopy beds that would be wasted on anyone who only wants somewhere to charge a phone.
Room choice matters. The Folly Suite is the prize, set apart in a historic oval building with its own garden and pool. Local lore gives the folly a wartime grocer story, which is almost too good to resist. Room Five sounds like the quieter connoisseur’s pick, with main house character, a garden terrace and a bathroom in the former chapel. At Casa Bonavita, booking “a room” feels a little careless. Ask questions.
The restaurant follows the same instinct. Chef Dex Oseman brings River Café training to a Maltese table of lobster, tomatoes, basil, citrus, bread, cakes and courtyard light. It looks generous rather than showy, the sort of food that understands sunshine without turning it into decoration. Lunch under orange trees may be the hotel’s strongest argument.
Casa Bonavita will not suit travellers who want sea views, nightlife at the door or resort choreography. Its pleasures are quieter: old stone, garden shade, good linen, painted walls, a pool held close by arches, and the feeling that someone with taste has been here before you, but kindly left the best chair free.
Good to know.
