Contemporary Art in Tashkent’s Former Tram Depot

  • A 1912 tram depot reworked by Studio KO.
  • Changing contemporary art exhibitions.
  • A research library, restaurant and art bookshop.
  • Contemporary art centre
  • 60–120 minutes

CCA Tashkent opened in September 2026 in a former tram depot and diesel station on Amir Temur Street. Built in 1912 and restored by Studio KO, the industrial building now gives contemporary art a permanent address in the city. Its original use remains part of the encounter: this is a place where the architecture matters as much as what is on the walls.

The programme brings artists from Uzbekistan and beyond into exhibitions, film, performance, talks and workshops. The inaugural exhibition, Hikmah, runs until 31 January 2027 and uses new commissions and existing works to explore wisdom, materials and the building’s layered past. The centre also has a specialist research library, a 90-seat auditorium, a restaurant serving seasonal interpretations of Uzbek cooking and a small shop for books and editions.

Admission is free, but register for a time slot before you go. The library needs a separate appointment, and events follow their own schedule. Allow around an hour or two for the exhibition and building, longer if you plan to attend a programme event or eat on site.
