Fish Market Tsukiji Outer Market
Tsukiji begins with ice, knives and breakfast. Its narrow lanes are crowded with trays of crab, gleaming tuna, octopus, tamagoyaki, dried bonito and seaweed, while shopkeepers work behind counters barely wider than their displays. The effect is wonderfully direct: part food market, part professional pantry, with enough steam, shouting and handwritten price tags to wake you faster than coffee.
The name Tsukiji means “constructed land”, a clue to an older story. After the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657, this edge of Edo was reclaimed from Tokyo Bay, with followers of nearby Honganji helping create the new ground. Much of today’s Outer Market later developed over former temple land, after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake reshaped the district and Tokyo’s central wholesale fish market opened here in 1935. Tsukiji Outer Market
The famous tuna auctions moved to Toyosu in 2018, but Tsukiji did not become a museum piece. The surrounding food businesses remained, still selling seafood, knives, cookware and ingredients to professionals as well as visitors. Come early and accept that breakfast may involve raw fish.
