Hotel De Tuilerieën

Location & practical

Old Bruges, New Pleasures

  • Historic residence overlooking the picturesque Dijver canal.
  • Romantic interiors blending classical elegance with contemporary touches.
  • Exceptional location in the heart of Bruges.
  • 41 rooms
  • Historic centre (Dijver / Museum Quarter)

The garden of Hotel De Tuilerieën may once have concealed Bruges’ most treasured possession. During the religious turmoil of 1578, the relic of the Holy Blood was buried for safekeeping, and historical research points to this very property as a possible hiding place. Quite a past for a hotel where the greatest dilemma today is whether to have another glass of champagne.

Overlooking the picturesque Dijver canal, De Tuilerieën occupies a grand residence with medieval origins and an elegant classical façade dating from around 1780. Its magnificent mahogany staircase is a reminder of the building’s aristocratic heritage, while the interiors reveal a rather charming mix of eras. Dark timber, rich fabrics and antique furnishings lend the drawing rooms a distinctly traditional character. Upstairs, individually decorated bedrooms take a lighter approach, with contemporary bathrooms providing an occasional surprise.

There’s a secluded courtyard for leisurely breakfasts, cocktails at The Parlour and Belgian cuisine at restaurant Mémoire. The Groeningemuseum is practically next door, while Bruges’ historic centre begins the moment you step outside.

Room choice matters here. Book a Royal Executive Room overlooking the canal for generous proportions and a front row seat to one of Bruges’ loveliest streetscapes. The Belfry Tower Suite offers another rather enviable perspective.

De Tuilerieën wears its romanticism comfortably. Those who prefer minimalist design might look elsewhere, but for a weekend of history, good food and the pleasure of staying in the heart of Bruges, this is a particularly appealing address.
