Hôtel du Palais Biarritz
1 Av. de l'Impératrice, 64200 Biarritz, France
About
Perched directly above the Grande Plage, Hôtel du Palais carries a past that still shapes every step inside. It began life in 1855 as the seaside palace of Napoléon III and Empress Eugénie, who turned a quiet Basque fishing town into a destination for Europe’s elite. The building you see today rose after a fire in 1903, faithful in spirit, with long, symmetrical façades facing the Atlantic and a scale that feels unapologetically imperial. Inside, the atmosphere balances ceremony with a certain coastal ease. Grand salons with chandeliers and polished parquet lead to terraces where the horizon takes over. The recent renovation by Hyatt has refined the palette rather than rewritten it, restoring silk wall coverings and sharpening the dialogue with the ocean. Some rooms retain a formal tone, yet those facing the sea deliver a sense of theatre that few hotels can match. The story extends beyond emperors. Coco Chanel was a regular here, drawn to the same Atlantic light that still defines the place. By the 1950s, that light attracted a different crowd as Biarritz became one of the first surfing spots in Europe, with early boards arriving from California and transforming the beach below into a new kind of stage. Dining at La Rotonde reinforces the setting. The circular room, suspended above the water, serves precise cuisine rooted in the region, with seafood taking centre stage. It feels composed, confident, and aligned with the rhythm outside. You come here for history you can inhabit, for a building that still carries its original purpose, and for that rare moment when imperial architecture meets the raw energy of the Atlantic.
