Josun Palace
At Josun Palace Seoul, history does not arrive in a silk robe. It arrives by elevator, high above Gangnam, where Teheran ro hums with corporate Seoul and the city seems to rebuild itself between breakfast and dinner. Yet the name reaches back to 1914, when the original Chosun Hotel introduced the Korean capital to the rituals of grand hotel life. A century later, its successor has traded old world corridors for altitude, brass, marble and a view that makes even jet lag feel well dressed.
Monaco based Humbert and Poyet give the hotel its particular tension: Korean references filtered through Art Deco curves and mid century European polish. It can feel almost too smooth, but that is also part of the theatre. The entrance glows like a film set. Pale green counters curve through Eatanic Garden like lacquered jewellery. In the rooms, Seoul fills the windows with towers, hills and ambition, while the interiors keep their voice low: cream, teal, soft upholstery, burnished metal.
Food sharpens the story. Eatanic Garden brings Michelin recognised Korean dining to the 36th floor, while 1914 Lounge and Bar nods to the hotel’s origin myth. Then come Cantonese cooking, grand hotel pâtisserie and cakes with a distinctly Parisian sense of self importance, which is no bad thing when eaten above Gangnam.
This is not the Seoul of wooden courtyards or market smoke. It is Seoul in evening dress: polished, vertical, slightly theatrical, and very good at making arrival feel like an occasion. Book at least a Grand Masters room, ideally a Grand Masters Bay. Here, the view is not a bonus. It is the point.
Good to know.
