L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele
L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele has been part of Naples long enough to dispense with decoration. The Condurro family began making pizza in 1870; Michele opened his own pizzeria in 1906 and moved to Via Cesare Sersale in 1930. His view on toppings was famously strict: Marinara or Margherita, while anything more elaborate risked being dismissed as papocchie, unnecessary fuss. The menu has since stretched to four pizzas, hardly a revolution. Inside, things remain brisk and functional. There are no reservations: take a number, wait to be called, then watch pizzas move from marble counter to wood fired oven at remarkable speed. Eat Pray Love brought Julia Roberts here, but Da Michele hardly needs Hollywood. Order the Margherita and accept that lunch may begin with a queue.
