Masseria Donna Menga
Masseria Donna Menga sits in the countryside of Nardò, close enough to the Ionian coast to make Porto Cesareo part of the day, yet far enough inland to keep its own rhythm. The building has good reasons for looking so solid. Documents mention the masseria as early as 1493, when it belonged to the Bishop’s Mensa of Nardò, and the tower still recalls a Salento where farms needed to think about harvests and Saracen raids in the same breath.
The restoration has not tried to make the place smoother than it should be. Thick limestone walls, vaulted ceilings, deep arches and pale floors do most of the work. The furniture stays quiet: cane, linen, warm wood, olive greens, the occasional blue tiled surprise. It feels edited, but not sterilised. Ask for a room with a patio if you can; the pleasure here lies in moving between cool stone, filtered light and your own small piece of outdoors. For families or architecture lovers, the tower suite gives the old building a stronger voice.
This is not a beach hotel, which is worth knowing before you pack three white linen outfits too many. Donna Menga is a rural retreat with access to the sea, not a room with waves at the window. That actually makes the stay more interesting: mornings under vaulted stone, afternoons at an affiliated beach club near Porto Cesareo, evenings back among courtyards, pool water and warm masonry.
Radici, the restaurant, gives the masseria its edible logic. Produce from the garden, orchard and olive grove appears in a contemporary Puglian kitchen that looks refined without losing its accent. Come for countryside, architecture, food and a polished kind of quiet. Lecce can provide the theatrical Baroque when required.
Good to know.
