About

At Belmond Hotel Monasterio, altitude and history quietly shape the experience. The building began life as a 16th century monastery, erected on Inca foundations shortly after the Spanish conquest. Today, its thick stone walls and cedar balconies still frame a central cloister where a 300 year old cedar tree anchors the courtyard, creating a rare sense of calm in a city that sits at 3,400 metres. Rooms balance colonial character with oxygen enriched air systems, a detail that quickly becomes essential rather than indulgent. The refectory has been transformed into a refined dining room where Andean ingredients meet classic technique, while the small chapel hosts a striking collection of Cusco School paintings with heavy gold leaf and vivid saints. The location is ideal, a short walk from the Plaza de Armas yet removed enough to feel insulated from the flow of visitors. Expect atmosphere, history and comfort. Do not expect contemporary minimalism or cutting edge design.
