On Naoshima, museums eventually close. At Roka, the art stays with you. Contemporary works occupy the public spaces and all eleven suites, with a new featured artist introduced twice a year. Some of the pieces can even be bought. Owner Shintaro Sasaki, whose family has been in hospitality for generations, wanted a place where visitors could meet over art rather than simply admire it behind glass.
Opened in 2022 on former terraced farmland near Honmura, the ryokan was designed by the Okayama studio Nottuo as a low collection of buildings against the trees. The materials are worth looking at closely: earthen walls from Awaji, handmade Tosa paper, Aji stone and sliding doors printed by Kyoto's Kira Karacho, a workshop established in 1624. There is also a sculpture by Kohei Nawa in the courtyard. Nothing feels arranged to resemble an antique Japanese inn. The architecture is contemporary, while the craftsmanship is entirely at home here.
Each suite opens onto a private deck with an outdoor bath facing the gardens. The one Roka Suite is especially generous, with a separate bedroom and Japanese room; the Premium Suites offer a little more space than the Deluxe rooms. At En, dinner follows the seasons and the fishing boats of the Seto Inland Sea, either as kaiseki or a limited sushi course. Afterwards, Moya serves drinks beside the communal outdoor hearth, a welcome chance to compare discoveries with other travellers.
Roka is five minutes on foot from Honmura and its Art House Project. It has no sea panorama or communal onsen: the appeal is the unusually personal relationship between the architecture, the artworks and a very good place to sleep.

roka.voyage - Check-in & check-out
- Check-in from 15:00, until 18:00, check-out by 11:00
- Parking
- Eight complimentary parking spaces on site. The approach road is narrow; oversized vehicles should use parking near the Art House Project.
- EV charging
- No EV charging at the ryokan. Use public charging facilities elsewhere on Naoshima.
- Getting around
- Reach Naoshima by ferry or passenger boat from Uno or Takamatsu. Roka arranges complimentary pickups and drop-offs at Miyanoura and Honmura ports when requested in advance. Local buses, bicycles and walking connect the island’s three main art areas.
- Arriving
- Arrange your port transfer with the ryokan after choosing your ferry and share your arrival time. Check-in is between 15:00 and 18:00. Roka is a short walk uphill from Honmura; the approach roads are narrow. Ferry services and museum opening days should be coordinated before booking.
- Pets
- Pets cannot accompany overnight guests.
- Accessibility
- The eleven suites occupy a single-storey wing, but the property is built into a landscaped hillside and detailed information on adapted rooms, accessible bath access and step-free routes is not published. Confirm specific mobility needs directly before reserving.
- Travelling with children
- Guests must be at least 12 years old. Children younger than 12 cannot stay overnight or dine at Restaurant En; the café can admit younger visitors.
- Dietary options
- Vegan and Pescatarian
Worth knowing
- Plan the ferry and ask Roka to arrange the complimentary port transfer; arrival must fit the 15:00–18:00 check-in window.
- Reserve key museum visits, particularly timed-entry exhibitions, separately and check their closure days before choosing your stay dates.
- Choose the dinner course in advance. The sushi kaiseki is limited, everyone in a group must choose the same course, and dietary needs require advance notice.
- Roka welcomes guests aged 12 and above. Its private outdoor baths do not use natural hot spring water; there is no communal onsen, sauna or gym.
- Book one of the ryokan’s electric bicycles ahead if you want to explore beyond Honmura; the island has hills and the main art districts are spread apart.
