Oslo Opera House
At the edge of Oslofjord, the Opera House appears to have misplaced its front façade. Snøhetta instead gave Oslo a vast sloping roof that runs almost to the water, clad in white Carrara marble and Norwegian granite. Since opening in 2008, people have treated it exactly as intended: they walk up, sit down, photograph the view and occasionally remember there is an opera house underneath.
That accessibility was deliberate. The architects drew on Norway’s tradition of allemannsretten, the right to roam, creating the first opera house whose roof was designed as freely accessible public space.
Inside, the mood shifts. A curving oak wall warms the glass foyer, while the main auditorium returns to the classic horseshoe form. Behind the scenes are around 1,100 rooms, including workshops for scenery, costumes, wigs and masks. The building also helped kick start Bjørvika’s transformation from industrial harbour to cultural district. Just offshore, Monica Bonvicini’s She Lies turns with the wind and tide. Opera ticket entirely optional.
Good to know.
