About

Walk through the grounds of Khoo Kongsi and you quickly understand why it is considered one of Penang’s great landmarks. Dragons crowd the rooftops, carved stone lions guard the courtyard and almost every surface seems to have been touched by a craftsman with remarkable patience. The clan house, completed in 1906, was built by the influential Khoo family and remains an active part of Penang’s Chinese community today. What you do not expect to find here is one of the city’s most intriguing hotels. Soori Penang occupies a collection of shophouses within the Khoo Kongsi compound itself. For most visitors, they are simply historic buildings. For architect Soo K. Chan, they were home. Long before founding the internationally acclaimed SCDA Architects, he spent his childhood here. Decades later, he returned to transform part of that world into a hotel of just fifteen suites. The contrast between the temple and the hotel is what makes the experience memorable. Outside, Khoo Kongsi is a celebration of colour, symbolism and craftsmanship. Inside, the mood shifts completely. Dark timber, stone, water features and carefully controlled light create an atmosphere of almost unexpected calm. The interiors feel contemporary without becoming detached from their surroundings. They simply allow the heritage outside to take centre stage. Step beyond the entrance and George Town unfolds around you. Temple courtyards, century old shophouses, coffee shops and some of Malaysia’s best street food are all within walking distance. Yet despite sitting in the middle of one of Southeast Asia’s busiest historic districts, the hotel feels remarkably quiet. The architecture is thoughtful, the location exceptional and the story impossible to replicate.
