About

At the far edge of Sydney Harbour, where the city gives way to cliffs, wind and open ocean, the South Head Heritage Trail remains one of Sydney’s most rewarding walks. Not because it is difficult. Quite the opposite. The trail is almost suspiciously easy for scenery this good. Starting near Watsons Bay, the path winds past immaculate harbour homes, old military fortifications and sandstone cliffs battered by the Pacific. Ferries drift across the water below while the Sydney skyline appears in flashes behind you, as if the city knows exactly how photogenic it is. The history feels unusually tangible here. Gun emplacements are carved directly into the rock and the cottages near Hornby Lighthouse still stand against the sea wind. In the nineteenth century, incoming ships were stopped here for quarantine inspections before passengers could enter Sydney. One imagines this felt less charming after several months at sea. What makes the trail memorable is the constant shift in atmosphere. Camp Cove feels calm and almost Mediterranean. Ten minutes later the ocean side turns wild, windy and loud enough to destroy any carefully considered hairstyle.
