Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden
Lavender St, Lavender Bay NSW 2060, Australia
About
What started as neglected railway land gradually became one of Sydney’s most characterful public spaces, built over years with little fanfare and a remarkable amount of physical labour. Part of the pleasure is how suddenly it appears. You leave behind quiet residential streets and within minutes find sandstone steps disappearing into dense greenery filled with giant figs, palms, ferns and twisting vines. Through gaps in the foliage, the Harbour Bridge keeps reappearing like an actor determined to remain in the scene. Old wooden chairs sit in unlikely corners, small sculptures emerge between plants, and sulphur crested cockatoos patrol the place with the confidence of long term residents. The garden succeeds because it still feels personal. There is no polished masterplan atmosphere, no prescribed route, no gift shop trying to convince you that a cushion cover counts as cultural enrichment. The slightly wild composition is precisely what gives the place its charm. Wendy Whiteley approached the space with an artist’s instinct rather than a landscaper’s restraint, framing harbour views, creating theatrical staircases and allowing nature to occasionally ignore the rules. Go late in the afternoon when the light turns softer across the water and trains pass overhead while the garden below remains strangely calm.
